Marvin’s Magic: Kings to Aces

Occasionally, I like to visit a Toy Store in my little rural town that has a section dedicated to magic tricks – often with Marvin’s Magic Tricks. He had a few collectible card tricks that came in, and I loaded up on most of them, which included the Kings to Aces trick. The trick is fairly simple to learn and is targeted to ages eight and up. I’d say the hardest part is the final reveal – getting the timing and confidence right so it lands cleanly.

The box advertises some bonus phone magic, but it wasn’t all that interesting to me to look into further. I was focused primarily on the physical trick itself, and mobile apps and phones quickly become inaccessible as technology advances. Tangible items tend to have a longer lifetime.

I don’t think of myself as a very good magician, or even a magician at all. However, these small tricks, mostly aimed at children to make them feel at ease, help me build some confidence. It doesn’t focus on sleight of hand as many of the harder tricks do. As a clown, my audience is often children. A few of the wiser children will try to expose how the trick works, or just blurt out the secret. The main thing is to just move on to the next trick and keep going so long as everyone is entertained. As a clown, I have permission to break the rules and act out how bad I am at doing magic in the recovery, just so long as everyone is entertained and that I’m not the one giving away the secrets.
