Overcoming the “Judgment” Hurdle

I’m usually the one trying to find problems to fix. Being the subject of a unanimous ballot—where a single negative vote could end the journey—was a different kind of pressure.

I’ve always struggled with groups judging me in a “tribunal” style. My experience at The Motley Fool—sitting in a circle of developers being grilled—was a specific trauma that bubbled up that night. In Masonry, you don’t get to “defend your resume” during the vote. You have to stand on the character you’ve shown during the preceding months of dinners and community service.

The Master’s Call

In Virginia Masonry, the Secretary handles the official paperwork, but the Master of the Lodge often handles the personal connection. Receiving that call directly from him late at night was the details of the Craft in action. It proved that while the Grand Lodge has its databases and background checks, the heart of the Lodge lies in the relationships among its members.

That call turned a night of doubt into a foundation of confidence. The “machinery” had worked, the “auditors” were satisfied, and the door was finally open.
