Eversweet Apiaries: Advanced Beekeeping

Mastering the Hive: Advanced Beekeeping with Eversweet Apiaries

After building a solid foundation in the basics, I immediately moved into the Advanced Beekeeping program offered by Eversweet Apiaries. This wasn’t just a simple overview; it was a deep dive into the professional-grade strategies seasoned beekeepers use to maintain high-producing, healthy colonies.

Facebook Event

The course was taught by Jennifer King, owner of Eversweet and a professional beekeeper. Over two intensive Sunday sessions in February 2021, we covered more than six hours of advanced curriculum via Zoom.

Technical Deep Dives

The sessions were split into specific strategic categories that every serious beekeeper must master to move beyond the “hobbyist” stage:

Session 1: Colony Dynamics & Growth

  • Honey Production: Strategies for maximizing yield while ensuring the bees have enough stores for themselves.
  • Nucs & Splits: The technical process of dividing a hive to expand an apiary or reduce congestion.
  • Swarm Prevention: Learning the early warning signs of a hive preparing to leave and how to intervene to keep your bees at home.

Session 2: Hive Health & Sustainability

  • Queen Introduction & Re-queening: This is one of the most delicate tasks in beekeeping—successfully replacing a failing queen to save a colony.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Refining our approach to monitoring and treating for Varroa mites and other stressors.
  • Bee Nutrition: Understanding the caloric and protein needs of the hive throughout the changing seasons of the Shenandoah Valley.

Professional Growth

Reflecting on this from December 2025, I realize how much this course filled the gaps that a decade of watching YouTube videos couldn’t reach. Having a professional like Jennifer King explain the “why” behind re-queening or swarm prevention added nuance that transformed my understanding of the apiary.

While I am currently working with the Eversweet team to finalize the digital paperwork for this certification, the 6+ hours of instruction have already proven valuable. It’s another step in my journey to better care for the world around me—whether that’s my neighbors or the pollinators in my backyard.
