Eversweet Apiaries: Beginner Beekeeper

A Legacy of Honey: Why I Finally Became a Certified Beekeeper

My interest in bees didn’t start with a YouTube video; it started with family. Growing up, I remember my uncle maintaining his own apiary. He kept my father—and our household—supplied with fresh honey, and that connection to the natural world left a lasting impression on me as a child.

In more recent years, that spark was reignited by the homesteading community. I spent a decade following homesteading channels, fascinated by the way these families lived off the land, managed their own food sources, and worked in harmony with their animals. I wanted to move from being a spectator of that lifestyle to an active participant.

Formalizing a Decade of Research

In January, I took that step by enrolling in the Beginner Beekeeping Course through Eversweet Apiaries. Even though I had ten years of informal research under my belt, I knew I needed official training to uncover the “unknown unknowns” and get expert answers to my specific questions.

Because of the pandemic, the $40 course was held over Zoom across four intensive Saturday sessions:

  • Foundations: Overcoming initial technical glitches to dive into bee biology.
  • The Tools of the Trade: Learning about bee nutrition, essential pollen sources, and the “woodenware” (equipment) needed to house a colony.
  • Hive Health: Mastering hive inspections and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to protect against mites and disease.
  • Managing Growth: Understanding the mechanics of packages, nucs, and the natural phenomenon of swarming.

After completing the course, I received my certificate on February 22, 2021.

Building for the Future

While I missed the chance to get into a live hive during the class due to COVID-19 restrictions, the formal structure was exactly what I needed. It allowed me to bridge the gap between my uncle’s old-school methods and modern beekeeping science.

The course was so rewarding that I immediately signed up for the Advanced Beekeeping class. For me, beekeeping is about more than just honey; it’s about continuing a family legacy and embracing the self-sufficiency I’ve admired in the homesteading community for years.
