The Ultimate Pursuit: Joining the LSSU Unicorn Hunters
My certification journey has taken me through fire stations, safety centers, and apiaries—but on November 1, 2025, I set my sights on something a bit more… mythical. I officially applied for my Unicorn Questing License through the Department of Natural Unicorns (DNU) at Lake Superior State University.
A Tradition of “Foolhardiness”
Established in 1971, the LSSU Unicorn Hunters are world-renowned for their unique approach to “public safety.” Being a licensed Unicorn Quester isn’t just about the hunt; it’s about a commitment to the majestic and the mysterious. According to the DNU edicts, a true quester must possess a rare blend of bravery, persistence, and perhaps a touch of foolhardiness.
While my Bear Identification certificate helps me spot the black bears in my Front Royal neighborhood, this license prepares me for a much rarer encounter: the glitter-shedding, single-horned residents of the deep woods.
The Rules of the Quest
Being a card-carrying member of the DNU comes with specific responsibilities. You can’t just go charging into the brush. Questers are expected to:
- Pursue with Purity: Seek the unicorn with a clear heart (and perhaps some sweet-smelling bait).
- Respect the Glitter: Be prepared for the environmental impact of stray sparkles.
- Observe the Edicts: Follow the official regulations established by the University to ensure the “safety” of both the hunter and the hunted.
Why Add This to the Collection?
You might wonder why this sits alongside my more serious certifications. Life is about balance. While it’s vital to be prepared for real-world emergencies, it’s just as important to keep a sense of wonder (and humor) about the world we imagine.
I’m currently awaiting my official paperwork from the DNU, but my eyes are already peeled for any signs of shimmering hoofprints.
