Health & Safety Institute: Basic Life Support

Leveling Up: From Standard CPR to Basic Life Support (BLS)

On December 14, 2024, I headed back to the safety center with a simple goal: renew my CPR training before it expired. However, a unique opportunity presented itself afterwards.

While many of the firefighters in the building were gearing up for a required Basic Life Support (BLS) course, I realized I had the time and the resources to join them. While most citizens stick to standard CPR & First Aid, I decided to take the leap into this professional-grade training alongside some of our local front-line heroes.

What Makes BLS Different?

Basic Life Support is a step above standard CPR. It is specifically designed for healthcare providers and public safety professionals. The course demands a higher level of proficiency in:

  • High-Quality CPR: Perfecting chest compressions and breaths for adults, children, and infants.
  • Team Dynamics: Learning how to work with a second rescuer to swap roles seamlessly and prevent fatigue.
  • Advanced Equipment: Using tools to manage airflow and ventilation that aren’t typically covered in a basic class or available to the public.
  • Rapid Defibrillation: Advanced integration of AEDs into the rescue process.

A Dedication to the Front Line

The student handbook for this course is dedicated to the healthcare workers and first responders who put themselves at risk every day. Reading those words while sitting in a room full of firefighters gave me a new perspective on the weight of this training.

The goal of BLS is simple but profound: to provide the best possible chance of survival for someone experiencing respiratory or cardiac arrest. Whether it is an obstructed airway or a heart that has stopped, the training ensures that you have the knowledge and the “muscle memory” to act when seconds count.

I’m grateful for the chance to learn alongside our first responders and to add these advanced skills to my toolkit.
