The Foundation of Care: First Aid, CPR, and AED Training

On the morning of December 14, 2024, I returned to the classroom to renew my foundational life-saving skills. My original certification was set to expire at the end of the month, and I’ve learned that in emergency response, “use it or lose it” is a reality. You want these skills to be second nature before you ever actually need them.

More Than Just CPR

While most people associate these classes strictly with chest compressions, the HSI Adult First Aid | CPR AED course is incredibly comprehensive. It’s designed to turn a bystander into a confident first-care provider.

We trained on a wide array of life-saving interventions, including:

Medical Emergencies: Learning to administer Narcan for overdoses and EpiPens for severe allergic reactions.
Trauma Care: Proper application of tourniquets to stop life-threatening bleeding.
Technology: Using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for adults, children, and infants.

We worked with specialized computerized manikins that provide real-time feedback on our depth and tempo, ensuring our technique is effective enough to actually sustain life.

The Role of the Responder

One of the most impactful parts of the course is the “soft skills” of a rescue. It isn’t just about the physical act of helping; it’s about taking command of a chaotic scene. We practiced:

Scene Safety: Assessing the environment to ensure we don’t become victims ourselves.
Legal & Ethics: Learning how to ask for permission to assist responsive patients.
Leadership: Identifying bystanders and assigning specific tasks—like calling 911 or retrieving an AED—to ensure help is on the way.

An Act of Human Kindness

The student handbook for this course features a dedication that really stuck with me. It is dedicated to every person who voluntarily chooses to aid another in need. It describes that choice as an “inspiring act of human kindness.”

I don’t take these classes just for a card in my wallet; I take them because I want to be someone the community can count on. It’s about being ready to help a stranger or a loved one on their worst day.
