Front Royal Lego Users Group: Organizer

Type: Grass Roots
Organization: Front Royal Lego Users Group (LUG)
Period: March 5, 2024 – Present (monthly)
Role: Founder / Organizer

I created a flyer and appeared on a roundtable video interview with the local paper’s reporter, who fielded a few questions. I visited various locations around town to distribute flyers to attract potential AFoLs, created a Facebook page, set up a WordPress blog, and established a Discord server for voice communication. I also worked with various venues to help the group meet elsewhere before settling on our local library. I booked the room for the next meeting and kept the blog updated with upcoming events. I’d like to suggest fun and optional challenges for the next meeting.

I’ve worked with Bricklink Studio to design a mountain trail standard developed by the group, and we have successfully created modules that integrate across various events, including Brickfair and the libraries’ SamiCon. The standard allows us to develop modules that interoperate with any other module, so that if a member is unable to attend an exhibit, different modules can take their place.

For me, the brick is a perfect balance between engineering and play. While I enjoy the discipline of building official sets, my true passion lies in the community and the creative “adventure” that happens when the instructions end.

This space documents my journey within the hobby—from founding and leading a local LEGO User Group (LUG) to the technical challenge of building Great Ball Contraptions (GBC). Whether I am following a master plan or designing a MOC (My Own Creation) from scratch, I focus on the personal growth, the fun of the build, and the collaborative spirit of the community.

Mastering the Language

If you’re new to the world of high-level building, here are the terms I use most:

  • AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO): Those of us who never outgrew the joy of building.
  • LUG (LEGO User Group): The local community groups I lead to bring builders together.
  • MOC (My Own Creation): An original design built without official instructions.
  • GBC (Great Ball Contraption): A collaborative mechanical “circuit” where different modules move small balls from one station to the next using complex physics and gears.
  • Modding: Taking an official set or a shared plan and adding my own personal “flair” or improved engineering.
