Building Community: Launching the Front Royal LEGO User Group

Many people in Front Royal know me as the guy cruising around in the “piece of cheese on wheels”—my 1976 CitiCar electric vehicle. But recently, I’ve decided to steer that same passion for engineering and community engagement toward a different kind of construction: LEGO.

On March 5, 2024, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mike McCool at the Royal Examiner about the launch of the Front Royal LEGO User Group (LUG).

Why a LUG?

For years, I traveled to Richmond to participate in their LEGO User Group, but the three-hour commute was time I’d much rather spend building. I realized we have many enthusiasts right here in Warren County. LEGO isn’t just a toy for kids; it’s a tactile, 3D creative outlet that allows adults to “unplug” from the digital world and focus on something physical and rewarding.

More Than Just Playing

During our “Town Talk,” we discussed how LEGO has evolved. We aren’t just talking about basic stacks of bricks (though those are great, too!). We’re looking at:

  • Technic Sets: These involve complex gears, motors, and even robotics.
  • Collaborative Builds: Where different members build separate “modules” that lock together to create a massive, impressive display.
  • Technical Mastery: Some builders even create LEGO robots that can solve Rubik’s Cube!

The First Meeting

We are officially “At Adventure’s Start” with this group. Our inaugural meeting is set for the last Saturday of March at 10:00 AM at the Samuels Public Library (Conference Room B).

While the group is primarily geared toward adults (AFOLs – Adult Fans of LEGO), minors are welcome as long as they are accompanied by a participating adult. The goal is to share ideas, show off our latest MOCs (My Own Creations), and plan future public displays for the town to enjoy.

Building Together

As Mike and I discussed, the beauty of the LEGO brick is its precision. A brick from 1958 still snaps perfectly onto a brick made today. That kind of enduring quality is exactly what I hope to build with this group—a community that stands the test of time.

If you have a passion for building, come join us. Bring a small set, share your ideas, and let’s see what we can construct together!
