VBScript 5.5 Certified Master

Reflection

Long before modern frameworks, npm ecosystems, and cloud platforms took over the industry, the backbone of many enterprise environments lived inside Microsoft technologies. In that world, VBScript wasn’t just useful—it was essential.

On September 27, 2000, I earned my Brainbench VBScript 5.5 Certification with Master designation, validating advanced proficiency in the scripting language that powered Internet Explorer, Classic ASP, Windows Script Host, and countless business applications of the era. At the time, VBScript served as the preferred scripting language for Microsoft environments, shaping web development on IIS and enabling automation both inside the operating system and across enterprise desktops.

It also shared DNA with VBA, which was powering productivity in Excel, Word, and Access—another reason VBScript mattered. If you were building data-driven web apps, automating workflows, or extending powerful office solutions, this was the language that made it happen.

The Brainbench exam was designed for experienced programmers and tested deeply on real-world topics, including:

  • Differences between VBScript, VB/VBA, and JavaScript
  • Debugging, error handling, and runtime problem solving
  • Functions, statements, control flow, and data manipulation
  • Objects, classes, and runtime object usage
  • Operators, fundamentals, and applied scripting logic
  • Program structure, data types, procedures, and variables
  • Script Engine fundamentals, including client-side scripting and the Windows Scripting Host (WSH)

Brainbench certifications were globally recognized at the time, backed by psychometric rigor, and trusted by employers in over 100 countries. Earning Master status meant demonstrating strong technical competence, problem-solving ability, and the ability to apply VBScript in production environments.

Looking back, this certification represents more than just a credential. It marks a period in the evolution of the web where creativity, problem solving, and technical curiosity helped shape what came next—and I’m proud to have been part of that journey.
