Sixth Street Blight

Houses in Front Royal

Sometimes it only takes one image.

One building. One location. One photo that gets shared enough times to start standing in for everything else.

That’s what’s happening with Sixth Street.

If you mention it locally, people already know. But what stood out to me recently wasn’t just local awareness—it was how widely it’s being seen outside the community.

A post circulating online gathered over a hundred comments. People reacting to a single image of a boarded-up house. For many of them, that image was Front Royal.

That’s the part that stuck with me.

This property isn’t hidden. It’s not tucked away. It’s along a main thoroughfare—highly visible, impossible to ignore, and increasingly deteriorating.

Boarded windows. Aging materials. Signs of long-term vacancy. Even the for-sale signage looks like it’s giving up.

And while I understand that situations like this are complicated—ownership, legal issues, financial constraints—the absence of visible progress creates its own problem.

Because perception doesn’t wait.

If nothing changes, then the story writes itself.

And right now, that story isn’t about history, scenery, or community—it’s about neglect in plain sight.

I had sent a PDF to the town council that included a link to the Facebook post, the post itself, and a few select comments categorized in different topics:

  • Blight & Visibility
    • It needs to be torn down, a real eye sore for too many years!
    • Sad that the town allows this to represent us.
    • This eyesore has needed attention for years! Where’s the responsibility?
  • Long Term Condition
    • It’s been like that for almost 30 years. The front porch I remember fell off 20 years ago.
    • Been an eyesore too long.
    • Been like that forever.
  • Accountability / Inaction
    • It just keeps getting worse. I don’t know why they haven’t done something about it.
    • Contact the Town Code Officer.
  • Community Perspective
    • This is one small cluster of dilapidated houses. Yes, something needs to be done here but this is not representative of Front Royal as a whole
      • Not true – Front Royal has many run down homes & properties.
      • Very much so representative of Front Royal
    • Houses like this exist everywhere
  • Personal History / Human Element
    • We lived in that house for five years.
    • It may not have been the best-looking house in Front Royal, but it kept a roof over a family’s head (also known as my husband)

I sent the document a few hours before the meeting so that the council members would have a fresh mind regarding what I wanted to speak about, and have context of the facebook post.

Blight on 6th Street
Transcript

Good evening, Mayor, Town Council. My name is Lewis Moten from the North… from 1132 Kesler Road. I’m used to speaking to a different audience. I’ve only come here, actually, to talk about the blight and all I have to do is mention Sixth Street, and you will all know exactly what I am speaking about. I don’t know what we can do about it, but I did notice a group called “I grew up in Virginia” over 100 comments was posted on a picture of Sixth Street of the House saying this is pretty much the town of Front Royal with many people commenting.

People just see the video photo and that’s what they see outside of town. That’s what we’ve become to be known as. It’s highly visible. It’s prominent on a very main thoroughfare.

There appears to be no headway or action on this item. It’s been boarded up long-term. There’s no trespassing signs all over. Even the paneling is becoming blight in itself. It’s just aging. There’s multiple shingles on the side. I don’t know if it’s asbestos in those shingles and what kind of effect that can have on just the wind blowing around. You know, it’s been for sale for many years. The person can’t even sell. I even looked over there today and their signs even deteriorated. So, you can’t even see who’s actually trying to sell the thing.

I know it’s not simple to resolve it. I know there’s a lot of issues with this property. The problem is there’s no progress there. We know it’s going to be for sale for decades. Nothing’s going to be done about this. We need something to be done. It’s affecting our community image. You know, everybody who potentially could tour here, they’re seeing what everybody else is saying.

But yeah, this isn’t just us, but it’s the most prominent thing here, and I would very much like something to be done about it. Thank you.
