Church of the Latter-Day Dude (Dudeism)
On the very same day I earned my PhD in Comedic Science, I decided to balance the scales of authority with a bit more… “slack.” On January 14, 2025, I became an ordained minister of the Church of the Latter-Day Dude, more commonly known as Dudeism.
Inspired by the cult classic The Big Lebowski and deeply rooted in ancient Taoist philosophy, Dudeism offers a refreshingly easygoing approach to spirituality. In a world obsessed with productivity and rigid bureaucracy, Dudeism preaches a simple, enduring creed: “Take it easy, man.”
The Credentials of Calm
My ordination package arrived, and I must say, it is easily the most aesthetically “chill” set of documents in my collection. Along with a Letter of Good Standing and a Certificate of Ordination, the kit included:
- A custom wallet card
- A Dudeist bumper sticker
- Two embroidered patches
- A gloriously sparkly rainbow sticker featuring the iconic “abiding fish” with sunglasses and sandals.
While a rainbow-fish sticker may not carry much weight in the 26th Judicial Circuit, there is a profound sincerity behind the satire. Dudeism reminds us that perspective, ease, and a good laugh are their own kind of sacred. It values calm over conflict and humor over hubris.
Why Dudeism Matters to the Experiment
Adding a Dudeist ordination to my “Experiment in Authority” serves a specific purpose. It asks a fundamental question: Who gets to decide what is “serious” enough to be a religion? Virginia law often looks for “solemnity” and “sincerity.” Does a minister who abides in a bathrobe have less of a right to celebrate a wedding than one in a stiff collar? While the Commonwealth might view a bowling-inspired faith with a raised eyebrow, the Church of the Latter-Day Dude provides a vital piece of the puzzle: the reminder that we shouldn’t take the bureaucracy—or ourselves—too seriously.
For now, I’m holding onto these credentials as a reminder to keep my cool as I navigate the upcoming hurdles at the courthouse. After all, the Dude abides.
