Lewis Edward Moten III, known as Lewie, has been an invaluable member of the Samuels Public Library Board of Trustees since joining in July 2023. Serving on both the Strategic Planning Committee and the Policy & Bylaws Committee, Lewie brings an impressive range of expertise to the library. With an Associate of Arts in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix Online, Lewie has worked at several respected companies including Computer Sciences Corporation, Analysis Research Planning Corporation, digitalNATION, Vii Medical, and Decipher Technology Studios. His diverse client portfolio includes major organizations such as NASA, USCIS, the State Department, US Pacific Fleet, and Deltek, where he focused on financial systems, asbestos claims, prospectus reports, nuclear counterproliferation, congressional reporting, and synchronizing data between NIPR/SIPR networks. His experience in strategic planning, contract management, and navigating sensitive issues makes him a significant asset to the library’s leadership. Lewie is also an alumnus of the Front Royal/Warren County Chamber of Commerce Leadership program.
Lewie’s dedication to accessibility and inclusivity is a cornerstone of his work. From his early days at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he first addressed web accessibility concerns, to his professional career in 1998, Lewie has been committed to creating technology that is accessible to all, including those with visual impairments. He has contributed open-source programs, several of which have received recognition and awards, emphasizing his passion for digital inclusivity. This passion extends to his work at the library, where he advocates for ensuring digital resources are available to all members of the community.
A staunch defender of intellectual freedom, Lewie has consistently championed the public’s right to access information. His previous service on the Board of Zoning Appeals, where he took an oath to uphold the Constitution, reflects his commitment to protecting the rights of individuals. He continues to advocate for intellectual freedom at the library, ensuring it remains a place where everyone can access the information they need.
Lewie’s personal journey gives him a deep understanding of empathy and resilience. Growing up with learning disabilities, he struggled through much of his public education. His mother’s encouragement to visit the library to help improve his reading comprehension shaped his determination to support others facing similar challenges. This personal experience has fueled Lewie’s lifelong commitment to advocating for accessibility and empowering individuals with diverse needs.
In addition to his work at the library, Lewie is dedicated to education. He is actively developing programs to teach teens and adults technical skills in areas such as Linux, electrical engineering, networking, programming, artificial intelligence, and video game development. His educational initiatives are designed to equip the community with the tools they need to thrive in today’s digital world.
Lewie’s commitment to service extends far beyond the library. As a proud Freemason and Shriner, he supports various charitable causes, including veterans, seniors, homeless, and children in need of medical care. His volunteer efforts include sponsoring events like the Civic Pride Workshop, contributing to local initiatives such as the Warren Coalition’s Celebrate Kids Day, and assisting at local events like the Wine & Craft Festival, Christmas Parade, and Festival of Leaves. He also volunteers at the Hope and Relief Temporary Shelter and Warren County Senior Center. Certified in First Aid, CPR, AED, and trained in Narcan administration, Lewie is always ready to assist in emergencies, further demonstrating his dedication to the safety and well-being of his community. His ongoing commitment to giving back is also reflected in his role as a blood donor to the American Red Cross.
Lewie’s passion for preserving local history shines through his work with the Warren Sentinel project. As part of his research at the Warren Heritage Society, where he serves on the Archive Committee, Lewie is helping digitize historical issues of the local newspaper. He is working to bring the library and the Warren Heritage Society together with the Library of Virginia to make these valuable records accessible to the public on the Virginia Chronicle. Lewie is also a member of the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution, attending events that are patriotic, historical, and educational.
Known for his environmental advocacy, Lewie modernized a 1976 electric CitiCar, upgrading its components to be compatible with modern public charging stations. His research into the history of the CitiCar revealed striking parallels to the challenges faced by Tesla, further reflecting his commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Lewie’s community contributions also include creating a Little Free Library and a Dog Library at his home, where neighbors can exchange books and pet supplies. His dedication to making a positive impact on his community is unwavering, and his commitment to service, accessibility, and education continues to make him an exceptional asset to Samuels Public Library and the broader Front Royal community.
