Patterns and Pages: Introducing Myself to the Samuels Community

Public speaking isn’t always easy, even when you’re passionate about the subject. On December 4, 2024, I had the opportunity to introduce myself at the Samuels Public Library Q&A Forum. It was my first major public appearance as a Trustee-at-Large, and I’ll be the first to admit: I was a bit nervous.

A Minor Time-Travel Error

During my introduction, I mentioned that I joined the board in 2013 during “that big meeting with all the cameras.” In reality, I joined in 2023—at the absolute height of the book challenges and debates that drew national attention to our local library. While my tongue slipped back a decade, my heart was firmly in the present, ready to help the library navigate a complex chapter of its history alongside my colleague, Mark.

The “Data Guy” Background

I wanted the community to know that while I am a resident who loves this town, I also bring a specific technical lens to the table. Since 1998, I have worked in the IT sector, specifically on high-stakes projects including:

  • Government Contracts: Working with agencies like NASA.
  • Financial & Legal Analysis: Dealing with companies like Deltek and complex asbestos claim trusts.
  • Pattern Recognition: My job is to look at “Big Data,” analyze it, and find the patterns that others might miss.

As I told the audience, “it’s just data to me.” Whether it’s a government budget or a library’s circulation statistics, I’m the guy who looks for the narrative hidden in the numbers.

Investing in Front Royal

I moved to the area in 2017, and although most of my clients are located outside of the region, I’m proud to be a “remote contributor” to our local economy. I bring that out-of-area revenue back home to spend right here in Front Royal.

This introduction was the start of my commitment to ensure that Samuels Public Library remains a transparent, data-driven, and welcoming “lighthouse” for everyone in Warren County.
