Nonprofit: Hope and Rest Temporary Shelter (HARTS)
Formally: Front Royal Thermal Shelter
Period: December 2022 to Present (monthly)

During the harsh winter months, I dedicated time, funds, and supplies to support Hope and Rest Temporary Shelter (HARTS), a non-denominational, low-barrier, overnight shelter serving homeless adult men and women. While my availability varied due to personal commitments, my commitment to supporting vulnerable community members remained steady.

I initially volunteered on Christmas, a day when many others had prior commitments. After speaking with the nonprofit’s president—whom I knew through the Chamber of Commerce—I began volunteering on Fridays, which were often the days with fewer available helpers.

By the following winter, my participation transitioned to a monthly schedule coordinated with another community organization.

By serving meals to 20–40 patrons and assisting staff, I’ve come to know several individuals personally and continue to see some of them around town. The experience reinforced that everyone has a story and dignity deserving of compassion, even under challenging circumstances.

Masonic Affiliation

This service is performed as part of a recurring community outreach effort coordinated through a local Masonic lodge. Monthly participation focuses on maintaining a consistent presence, providing assistance, and fostering respectful human connections for individuals experiencing homelessness.
