Summary
In Episode 5 of Blue Hair, Dedric Mauriac explores how people discover and buy products in Second Life—starting with MetaMart, a system that blends searchable web-style listings with in-world purchasing. He compares it to services like 411 and SL Query, explains the friction of “finding the box but not the product,” and highlights MetaMart’s key improvement: buying directly from the in-world box, complete with images and notecards. Along the way, he drops practical creator tips, like always listing your in-world shop location on SL Exchange/SL Boutique listings.
The episode ends with a lighter inventory digression: Dedric rediscovers a set of adoptable Caledon turkeys—survivors of a “massacre” backstory—and sets them loose with expanded roaming distance so his space feels alive instead of static. It’s a charming snapshot of early metaverse commerce and home-sim ambience, capped with a hilarious stray audio clip at the end.

Notes: Geoff Smith creats a jingle for my show … woohoo!
A bit about a new product called RaffleTron with a networked lottery. I pose for a Dead or Alive mugshot (illegal moonshine) and talk about a Sadie Hawkins day dance at Los Arboles. I dig into a new service called Meta Mart that allows you to search and buy products in-world through a HUD, and sell your own products too. Then I talk about turkeys.
Bucket promo at the end.

Blue Hair, episode number 5.
Hello everybody. This is Dedric Mauriac. Alright, next on my list is Metamart. Sears Asteris actually told me about this one a while back. I don’t know if any of you have heard of 411 or SL Query, but how these systems usually work is you drop items in, and they talk to a website to say what items you have at your current location. Then people can search the website, find an item they want, and come visit you in World where the box is located, and supposedly find your items as well. This works great because a lot of people I’ve found, I don’t know a lot of them, but quite a few have talked to me, asking me if I sold my products in World because they would find something on SL Exchange or SL Bt, or just seeing things on my blog. They prefer to buy things in World with the trust because they know how things work. It’s more of a system that they know how it works, or maybe they don’t have accounts, I don’t know. The problem here though is, well it’s not a problem, it’s just that this network works where you can search the items that come in World and find the shop.
Since then, here’s a tip. I put it on most of my items I list on SL Exchange and SL Boutique, a little thing that says where my shop is in World, so that they can see demonstrations and such. If they don’t want to buy it on SL Exchange, or if they want to see how it works, they can come over to my shop and see things there, or if they need to talk to me in World, they can usually find me there. These items will actually be searchable through the websites, and then you find them in World. The problem though is these boxes might be at places, but then you don’t know where these items are to buy, they’re not right next to them. MetaMart took the same concept or idea, except that they allow you to buy items from the boxes themselves. So you still buy items within the second life World, but you don’t have to visit the shop to buy them. So I tried it out and I’ve gotten a few of my items up already, and mostly free items are selling right now.
I haven’t sold anything for actual money just yet, although I do have quite a few products listed up there. So what I found out is first you have to wear this hood, and the hood’s actually nice compared to the other ones because you can see pictures of the products. You can click on the information icon to get a note card about the products, which is a lot more than these other items do. Most of the systems I’ve seen will just list the name of the product, and when you click it you go to the location. So that’s nice. Alright, I just started out with MetaMart, so I may have to come back to that later time.
But it does take some time, and you need to know how to copy an asset ID, which is a, if you right mouse click on an image that you own or upload it, it would say copy asset UUID, and that’s what you use to add to your picture identification in the website provided. Alright. And last but not least, we’ll talk about turkeys. Turkeys, turkeys, turkeys. I have lots of turkeys. Apparently I’ve adopted some turkeys way back when I was visiting Caledon, and I was looking at this note card that says that they have survived a massacre and that my adoption will be treating them nice and whatnot, blah blah blah.
The turkeys are kind of fun. I don’t really interact with them per se, but I did set them up instead of going the 2 meter radius. They travel 10 meters. You just edit a note card and you can set the number from 2 to 10 or whatever number you like. And they randomly pick a spot and gobble gobble all the way to it.
I have 3 turkeys up right now and I don’t interact with them much, but it’s just better than having a stagnant environment that does nothing. So there were 3 different kinds. I could get a, well I got all 3, it comes in one package. There’s the regular one that’s scripted and gobbles, then there’s the one that doesn’t gobble, but it still moves around. Then there’s the static ones if you just want them as long ornament. Thanksgiving is long past, but I don’t know.
I just went through my inventory just looking at stuff that I had, and these were some fun things to play with. So with that note, I guess I’ll end. Oh I didn’t leave you hanging, did I? Well, you know, I cannot think of anything off the top of my head to leave you hanging either.
