Summary
In the fourth episode of Blue Hair, Dedric Mauriac reports from McDougo’s Gadget Trade Show, where RacerX’s explosive booth effects and hypnotic particle gadgets set the tone for Second Life’s growing culture of interactive spectacle. He also explores Papa MalMal Snookums’ Wildflowers “holodeck” platform—a modular environment designed to host community gatherings, concerts, meetings, and dance clubs all within a single shared space.
The episode continues with hands-on scripting help for Dr. Fran Babcock’s blinking-eyed virtual pets, a barter that earns Dedric a custom blue-gradient tuxedo, and the reopening of his Sollywood shop inside a newly rebuilt boardwalk town. It closes with a surreal tea party inside Aesthia Abion-Sim’s Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired world, previewing an upcoming fashion volume and showcasing how Second Life blended art, performance, and social life into one continuous digital experience.

This is Dedric Mauriac with Blue Hair, Episode Number 4. So, let’s get this poem on the road, shall we? Show on the road. So, McDougos trade show. It was pretty cool. RaceHRXGullyWig, or GirlWig, I’m not sure how you say his name, but he had set up his booth at the same time I had set up mine. And we were both burning the midnight oil, or at least he was exploding it. And he had his booths with a briefcase in it so that if anybody walks up and touches it, the whole booth apparently blows up before your very eyes.
And the floor gets busted up and goes everywhere and there’s black and gray smoke everywhere. So, he’s always doing these really big, funny, cool projects. And at the show, he was advertising that he can help you with all your demolition needs for Mickey Nima or whatever you need him for. One of the things that he was selling there was a particle toy. And this thing is very mesmerizing or hypnotic in a way, because it’s got eight different particles that stream out and it’s set up to do different patterns to spit them out.
Like they’re all symmetrical in a pattern and the color is just pretty much dense before your very eyes. He also had a video set up that I could see and it was pretty cool because I think it was about 20 minutes in length. It was pretty long, but it shows you everything that it does and he says you can customize it a bit to have your own patterns emerge from it. So, I had not gotten to set that up just yet. I still need to put it out and put it on display. I usually don’t buy things in Second Life and this thing I actually went ahead and I purchased it because it was pretty cool.
Also at the Gadget Expo was… I’m trying to figure out how to say this guy’s name. Um Papa Mal Mal Snookums. And a friend of his actually invited me to her own shop because she liked what I had and invited me to see all of her artwork and such. And she told me about this guy. This guy did have a booth set up at the Gadget Trade Show as well and she was telling me that he was working on something that seemed to be like a holodeck.
And I was interested because I’ve seen quite a few holodecks in the past and you know they’re pretty cool for setting up different rooms or environments in one place. I wasn’t able to find the shop from his profile because it went to the location. He had this his Wildflowers company set up in a new location and he was on a I would say 20 by 20 platform with steps leading up to it. The platform was set up at a bar at the time and he started to go into his motivation for doing something like this. And it turns out that he had wanted to make a common place where a whole community could stay in one location for different events that tag on one after another. Whereas if you go to a sim there would probably be different locations set up around the sim for each event and people would just migrate to each event. And um this one was set up more like a I would say more like a chat environment or a place to hang out.
But you could easily set up games and such to be hosted in the different scenes here. He had a scene of a a terrace which was a Greek garden with a look like a lot of vines hanging down from some wooden beams. It was actually pretty good.
I like that one the most. And he even had a hammock that swung back and forth. And then he also had a stage set with drums and keyboards and the microphone and some rotating lights and stuff. And you know I just start making some fun and saying hello everybody thanks for coming.
I hope you enjoy the show. And of course it was just me being funny. What else did he have? He had like a he had a bar, a terrace, a stage for a band. He had a dance club. He had a meeting room. I don’t know if any others.
I don’t know. But I gave him some tips on critique to a bit more like giving him suggestions of improvement. Like for the the band and stuff I suggest that he could put like trash on the floor and a bar on the side or maybe some walls with posters and such. Mainly to get the place more ambience of the environment that it is. Everything else about it was great. It’s just it needed more of a feeling of where you were. But you know you can definitely sell these things as they are in you know just improving them over time really helps get your customers really happy that I found.
Because they actually see improvement on their own products which I have so many but I need to really get back to improving them again. What was next? I had Dr. Fran Babcock was trying to make a pet. I had given her a script before so that you could touch this pet and the pet would make a sound or you could tell the pet to speak or whisper or shout. I think there was one more thing.
I don’t know. But Dr. Fran wanted the pet to have its eyes blink and one of the main problems with what she had she did get the eyes to blink but it was like one or the other with blink. They weren’t blinking synchronously at the same time. So I spent a good bit of time telling her how to make these eyes blink using a timer event and a link message. So when you start your script you can have state entry and put in a ll set timer event unless you say a minute is 60 seconds right? So every 60 seconds we want our eyes to blink. Okay now you make another event handler in there called timer and then the timer code block you would put in ll message link and you would put in like let’s see link underscore set I think it would be like set and then you’ll put comma zero comma quote blink quote comma null underscore key and that would send a link message through all the other prints with a number of zero a message that says blink and the id would not would just be a null key which would be all zeros.
So you can actually look more of this up on the wiki which would be lsl wiki.com I think rpg stats might have a wiki too and the bad geometry site is putting to a new wiki which would be secondlife.com slash bad gio I mean gio sorry. Alright so that part we got set up so that was sending out messages but we needed to listen to messages too. So you have your other two primes are linked to main root prim and each of those primes need to have a script that listens for that message and the event handler for that would be link underscore message and just refer to the site or something for the rest of these parameters but when it got that message we would set the texture to um nd then we would tell it to sleep. So it would be l l sleep and I think we said .5 for half a second. And then we had l l set texture again, but with the close note with the open eye. So your eyeballs going to close, wait half a second and then open, which is a blank.
And then we did the same script for both eyeballs and in this case you would have both eyeballs blink in unison when this link message goes through the object premise. So in return Dr. Fran decided to make me a tuxedo and she was just saying that I could give her any ideas I would like for a tuxedo. So later on I figured well, you know, I always like all these gradient blues so I’m going to have a gradient blue tuxedo. I think she really got a kick out of that one because she knows how I like my blue hair and all these blue gradient colors. So she made a tuxedo. Actually it was halfway done and I wore it to a party tonight which was pretty cool, but I just wore the top because the bottom was fading from a black top to a blue bottom. And it didn’t really look too good with a gradient pink on the bottom so I just said, you know, just keep the gradient on the top.
It would be pretty cool. So she went with that. Alright, so what else happened? Sollywood.
Alright, Sollywood’s back. I used to have a shop over there a while back and mainly that was a place I just visited and threw up prims everywhere for each product I sold. But I didn’t really do much there.
I didn’t really have my store like dressed to the nines. And then eventually the owner of the sim had just kind of left or something. So I was contacted by, was it Alice White? She invited me back to Sollywood. She said she was redesigning the whole sim to be more like a town.
And I came over and checked it out and it was pretty cool. She had a request because she knew I’d made some scripts for the previous owner of the sim. And she just needed a lot of an object that would change a number displayed to the end user depending on what booth number they were in for their building.
So I gave her, I was able to reuse some of my scripts I used for the password generator that I have. And I just made a block that changes a number. You touch it, you say what number you want it to be in chat and it changes that number. It goes from I believe it’s 0 to 99.
And you could probably put two of them together to even go up to what, 9,999 or even higher with more of them. They actually looked pretty good. She was pretty happy with what I gave to her. And she had another script that she proposed for me to do, which I still need to get on top of that. Something to hand out food depending on what the user wants. So I got a shop right on the corner of a boardwalk. I actually like the location.
It’s a lot better. It’s a smaller shop, but it’s much nicer with how she had set it up. She had actually customized a lot of it just for me with some of the shinginess and she put my advertisements across it and such. But I went ahead and I even did the interior to be a lot more like my main shop over in Higgins. I have the white columns that are pretty thick. I have the blue floor with the particles coming up in squares, which was actually from my dreamy audio podcast. One of my dreams I dreamt that everybody was turning digital to represent that in Second Life.
I made a little prop with squares going up from the floor. But you can check that podcast out. I think it’s dreamyaudio.potchere .com. I also put on my 360 degree rotating floor mats, which are just classic of my shop in Higgins again. If you want to check it out, head on over to Slylywood.
That’s like Hollywood, but with an SL. Look for booth 14 by the Docs. You’ll see the new shop over there.
I’m very happy with it over there. Let’s see, last but not least was a tea party with Aesthia Abion-Sim. She had invited a small group of people, friends, that she knew. I was included as part of that to go to the sim that she’s opening up. It’s not opened yet.
It will be later on. It was pretty cool. She had designed the whole thing to be like a… Well, not the whole thing, but parts of it were like Alice in Wonderland part.
You know where the Mad Hatter sat down for a tea party? There’s ice cream and jello and cakes and just everything. I cannot think of what was always on this thing.
My poor head. There were all these houses built up that were kind of crooked. Like they were meant to be crooked in these hills. It was just so pretty wild with how it fit in with the theme. I see we all sat there drinking coffee or no tea.
I complain that mine tasted like licorice. What else did we do? We did a lot of posing because she stated that a lot of us were going to be in her fifth volume for her avatar fashion. I just got the third volume in the mail the other day, which is pretty cool.
I was actually on three different pages, I believe. She was also doing a lot of movies also. I wonder what that’s going to be like. I need to check those out when she puts them out on the internet or whatever she’s doing with them. What if she’s selling a DVD or something?
If it is, I hope it’s available for Linden’s because that’s how I pay for everything. What did we do next? We went to a pool, went swimming, and then we went to a railroad station. Everybody got to ride on the railroad all the way around the Sim. I got to see everything. There are so many things in this Sim that she’s done. It’s just amazing.
I can’t wait until it opens up and I can go back and just hang out there and check out everything that she’s got. Let’s see, after the railroad we all went dancing. That was pretty much it, but it just lasted so long. It was two hours, so it really wasn’t just a small amount of stuff that we did.
It was just quite a lot of stuff. When Volume 5 comes out, grab it. Actually, go ahead and grab the other volumes that are out right now. You can get one through four. I think four is just pre-order right now, but you can get the first three and they’ll be sent to your house.
I know that the third one is available for Linens if you want to buy that. You can head on over to her shop in Bolinas. If you go there, you can find her book.
If you just buy the book in the world, I think somebody will ask you for your street address so they can send it to you via postal mail. Who knows what else. You know what, it’s like 20 minutes.
I think that’ll be it for tonight. So anyway, Recap, McDucko’s trade show with RacerX has a pretty cool particle toy and likes to blow things up. The Holodex with Pappamalmalsnookums for Wadflowers company. I know it’s scripted with Dr. Fran Badcock with blinking eyes. Slylywood, a number sign in my shop.
Then the Tube Party with Istia Abion. So this is Blue Hair. You can find it over at BlueHair.podshow .com. You can find my blog at dedrickmariac.wordpress .com.
You can email dedrick.mariac .gmail.com. And…Mariac is such a hard name to spell, you know? But anyway, in case nobody knows how to spell it because it sounds different than you say it, unless you’re French, I guess. It’s M-A-U-R-I-A-C. And yes, that’s French.
