Frankfort High School: Independent Yearbook Advertising Liaison

B2B Sales & Digital Creative Production

Independent Yearbook Advertising Liaison | Frankfort High School November 1993 – April 1994 | Ridgeley, WV

Independent Revenue Generation: Initiated a self-directed advertising program to subsidize publication costs. Identified and secured B2B contracts with local businesses, serving as the primary liaison between commercial clients and the school’s print production team.

Technical Graphic Remediation: Utilized Deluxe Paint II and Disney Animation Studio to engineer visual assets. Provided critical “print-ready” remediation for client-provided designs that were unsuitable for publication. Navigated client requirements by offering tiered design options, from custom-engineered graphics to high-clarity text layouts, ensuring successful final print execution.

The “Strategic Asset” Reflection

Hardware Limitations & Manual Porting: In 1994, the gap between “analog” and “digital” was a chasm. Handheld scanners were rare, expensive, and notoriously unreliable. Since I didn’t have the hardware to “import” a client’s logo, I had to be the bridge.

I would take a business card or a hand-drawn sketch from a shop owner in Fort Ashby, sit down at my computer, and reconstruct it pixel-by-pixel in Deluxe Paint II. This was my first lesson in Resourcefulness as an Architectural Principle. When the “standard” tool is unavailable or cost-prohibitive, you find a manual path to the same objective.

It also taught me about User-Centric Design. I realized that the value I provided wasn’t just “making it digital”—it was preserving their identity. Today, when I’m architecting systems, I remember that the most advanced tool isn’t always the best solution. Sometimes, the best way to ensure data integrity during a migration is to have a deep, manual understanding of the source material. I was “porting” brands before I ever ported code.
