Mineral Daily News-Tribune: Substitute Newspaper Distributor

Logistical Fulfillment & Account Management

Substitute Newspaper Distributor | Mineral Daily News Tribune May 1992 – May 1994 | Fort Ashby, WV

Operational Redundancy & Support: Assumed responsibility for daily distribution and financial collections on behalf of a family member to ensure zero service interruptions. Acted as the designated backup for a three-mile, high-terrain route, maintaining fulfillment standards during primary carrier absences.

Logistical Fulfillment & Terrain Navigation: Executed time-critical delivery of media under extreme environmental conditions, including ice, snow, and rural wind. Optimized route efficiency by navigating non-standard terrain and property cut-throughs to meet strict deadlines before school hours.

Accounts Receivable & Community Relations: Managed manual subscription payment collections and addressed neighborhood concerns. Demonstrated interpersonal diplomacy and situational awareness while navigating local environmental challenges (terrain and animals).

The “Strategic Asset”: The Family “On-Call” System

The Redundancy Specialist: My role with the Mineral Daily News Tribune was essentially my first foray into Site Reliability Engineering. My younger brother owned the route, but I was the “failover” system. When he couldn’t go, the papers still had to be in the boxes by 6:00 AM.

Navigating the steep, iced-over hills of Fort Ashby with a heavy bag taught me that the “user” doesn’t care who is delivering the service—they just care that the service is delivered. Stepping in for my brother taught me the importance of system knowledge transfer; I had to know his route as well as he did to ensure the neighborhood never saw a “down” day.
