Before there were webrings, there were groups of people who agreed to place a link to a webpage listing everyone else’s webpage. This icon was made for a group I joined called the Inner Circle.

In the 90’s, this was the standard size for most buttons on the Internet that linked to software and website services.
Web rings usually had you linking to a server using a query string to pass the ring ID, your website ID, and a few actions such as prior, next, random, list, and join. If you didn’t paste the code onto your webpage in a certain way, you could be dropped from the ring. It was an early way to generate Internet traffic for websites on similar topics – unlike advertisement banners that were often unrelated to the content you were viewing.
